magdalino prosklisi

magdalino afisaAn international symposium entitled "Byzantine Thessaly, 12th-14th century" is organized on 21 and 22 October 2023 by the Larisa Antiquities Ephorate in collaboration with the Archeology Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Thessaly. The symposium, in which many Greek and foreign scientists will participate, is a tribute to the great Byzantine scholar Paul Magdalino, who delved into the history of late Byzantine Thessaly.

The period from the 12th to the 14th century, which the Symposium runs through, was a time of intense reorganization in the organization and administration of the Thessalian space and at the same time marked a great flowering in art with the establishment of the great monasteries in Kissavos, Pelion, Meteora, Elassona and elsewhere.

The Diachronic Museum of Larissa, which has a special section for this period with important exhibits, from monuments of Larissa and neighboring areas, is the ideal place to host the symposium, which will be held live and online, having English as the official language. The goal of the organizers is to promote the history and monuments of an era that brought Thessaly to the forefront of developments with its brilliance.

The Symposium is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Region of Thessaly, while its sessions are open to the public with free admission.
